На суданском острове Мероэ расположено древнее захоронение Баджравия возрастом 2400 лет, где находятся 140 пирамид, возведенных в мероитский период царства Куш. Состояние некоторых сооружений было нарушено: часть пирамид была разрушена европейскими охотниками за сокровищами с помощью динамита в XIX веке, а также пострадала от воздействия песка и дождей на протяжении двух столетий. В настоящее время, когда война между армией и военизированными силами быстрого реагирования длится уже третий год, единственный охранник памятника, являющийся наследником многолетней династии смотрителей, выражает надежду остаться рядом с пирамидами и никогда их не покидать.
The loyal, lonely keepers of Sudan's pyramids
The 2,400-year-old burial site of Bajrawiya, on the Sudanese Island of Meroe, holds 140 pyramids built during the Kingdom of Kush's Meroitic period. Some pyramids were decapitated, others reduced to rubble, first in the 1800s by dynamite at the hands of treasure-hunting Europeans, and then by two centuries of sand and rain. Now three years into the war between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, one guard, who is the heir to a long line of groundskeepers, says he hopes "to remain near these pyramids and never leave them."
