Alberta is Canada’s key energy-producing region, producing over 80% of the country’s crude oil and 60% of its natural gas output, and has the highest per-capita GDP among Canadian provinces. Under Canada’s Clarity Act, the House of Commons would have to determine whether a referendum question and result represented a clear expression of support for secession before negotiations could begin.The independence push also faces a legal challenge from Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation, which argues that Alberta’s potential secession would violate treaty rights with Indigenous peoples. The First Nation has asked a court to halt the process, saying the province has no right to leave Canada or take treaty territory with it.
